PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an alumina fiber block having small joint openings, and excellent in heat resistance and thermal insulation performance, and a furnace using the same. SOLUTION: The furnace is constructed with a block which has been produced by laminating and compressing an aggregate of alumina fibers having the content of alumina of >=70 wt.%. The alumina fiber contains shots having particle diameters of >=45μm in an amount of <=15 wt.%, and has an average fiber diameter of <=6μm. The bulkiness of the block is 0.08-0.13 g/cm<3> .
