The operating unit (1) includes a single piece, flat molded housing (2) which is closed on all sides by assembly inserts (5) and/or covers and has a cable conduit in the housing wall. The extended upper side (3) of the housing has a display and input keys formed as an assembly unit. The assembly unit is a detachable insert (5) which closes an opening (4) in the housing. The housing and the detachable unit include means for fastening the insert in the housing in at least two different positions.
