The invention relates to a type of catalyst that comprises a rare earth and magnesium and is characterised by the fact that it can be obtained by a method whereby ethylene is treated with a product obtained by combining an alcoholate of said rare earth and a magnesium organic compound. Said type can be used as a catalyst or a polymerisation initiator in olefin or lactone polymerisation, as well as for the copolymerisation of ethylene and a polar monomer. Furthermore, the invention relates to an ethylene (meth)acrylic co-ester diblock copolymer having a molar mass Mn of at least 200,000 and more specifically of at least 250,000.
