PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an elevator device that uses major equipment of a hydraulic elevator to be renewed and remodels it into a traction elevator. SOLUTION: A counterweight 19 is disposed between a wall surface of a hoistway 1 and an outer surface of a car 2, and in a position that corresponds to the place from which a hydraulic lifting and lowering mechanism 10 for vertical drive of the car 2 has been removed and does not overlap with the car 2 in the horizontal plane of projection. Both ends of a main rope 25 are connected respectively to the car 2 and the counterweight 19, and a hoist 21 with a driving sheave 22 about which the main rope 25 is entrained is disposed in a position that corresponds to the place of removal of the hydraulic lifting and lowering mechanism 10 and does not overlap with the car 2 in the horizontal plane of projection. Major equipment, such as the car 2, of the hydraulic elevator to be renewed is diverted to remodel it into the traction elevator. This reduces the construction cost and shortens the construction period.
