PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To display a recordable remaining time when performing a coding process at a variable length bit rate. SOLUTION: When a recording start is detected in ST1, the process goes to ST2 to read the empty capacity of a data storage, then the process goes to ST3. The maximum value and the minimum value of the recordable remaining time are calculated from the maximum and minimum bit rates of the coded data recorded in the data storage and the empty capacity of the data storage, and they are displayed in ST4. When recording is finished in ST5, the maximum value and the minimum value are stored. When no recording is started, the process goes to ST7 from ST1. When the maximum value and the minimum value are not stored, they are calculated, When the bit rate is switched in the coding process, the maximum value and the minimum value are also calculated. Since the maximum value and the minimum value are displayed, whether the desired contents can be recorded to the last or not can be correctly determined, and the contents can be efficiently recorded in the data storage.
