Catalytic converter (14) has priming phase activated when the engine is started and involves injecting predetermined volume of air upstream of the converter to maintain an oxidizing medium to promote exothermic oxidation reactions of pollutants. The volume of air, injected through a circuit (20) with air pump (22) and non-return valve (24), can be varied to give optimum rise in converter temperature and fast priming.
