The method includes maintaining active braking, if a certain gear ratio is engaged, or if the inclination of the vehicle is above a predetermined value and if the absence of the driver is verified. Braking is only de-activated when the gear ratio is changed from the neutral or parking position. The presence or absence of the driver could be detected, if the seat belt is not fastened or if the accelerator pedal is depressed. A computer receives these signals from sensors and engages or disengages the parking brakes.
