A platelike slide with one or more breaches moves sideways within the slots of a continuously variable bypass valve (12). The bypass valve is set at the bore upper end of the piston rod (7) of a dashpot. The flat surface of the slide alternately receives the fluid pressure from each of the upper and lower chambers (3,4) of the dashpot, through channels formed on the bypass valve. An Independent claim is also included for a method of adjusting a dashpot.
