A filtering device comprises a filter chamber (2) for the liquid to be purified and to which is connected a cylindrical filter candle (3) having a hollow cylindrical filter membrane through which the liquid can radially flow from outside to the inside. The candle is connected to a liquid run-off (4) for the filtered liquid. The candle is also connected to a cleaning device having nozzles (8) joined to a blast connection (7) which moves along the candle. The blast connection is formed as a freely moving nozzle ring with cleaning nozzles. An Independent claim is also included for a process for operating a cleaning device. Preferred Features: A second nozzle ring with slanted cleaning nozzles directed upwards is also provided. The first nozzle ring and the second nozzle ring are axially joined together as a coupling unit. The cleaning nozzles are uniformly distributed over the periphery of the nozzle ring.
