PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an illumination device which can lessen illumination unevenness and a projection type display device using the same. SOLUTION: This device has a light source 1, a rod integrator 2 which is made incident with the light from the light source 1 and emits the light, a relay lens 11 which is made incident with the exit light from the rod integrator 2 and emits the light and a polarized light converter 3 which is made incident with the exit light from the relay lens 11. The polarized light converter 3 has a polarization beam splitter array formed by laminating plural polarization beam splitters 31 to an array form and half-wave phase plates 32 on the prescribed polarization beam splitter exit surfaces among the plural polarization beam splitters 31.
