In an automatic character reading apparatus the characters are scanned in a series of vertical strokes to produce black or white signals on a terminal f, Fig. 1, which are applied to a trigger VS and to And gate UG and Neither- Nor gate WN. The output from the trigger forms the other inputs and is the same as signal f, slightly delayed. Gate UG responds to a sequence of two black signals and gate WN to a sequence of two white signals. The output of gate UG is passed through Or gate OG and blocking gate SG to shift register GS. This holds exactly one vertical scan and it has a recirculating loop via Or gate OG. The character may be written and have an irregularity as shown on the underside of the line in Fig. 2. The vertical lines n - 2 to n + 1 indicate successive scans and the horizontal lines m - 1 to m + 2 indicate the delay imposed by the trigger VS. The signals derived from the scanning are as shown in Fig. 3. The effect of the irregularity is removed by the circuit to produce signals as shown in Fig. 4. In scan n - 2 the gate UG responds when the signal and the output of trigger VS are both black, i.e. down to line m + 2, to enter a black signal via Or gate OG and blocking gate SG to register GS. This signal recirculates and is only modified in succeeding scans at the point where the signal and the trigger output are both white. Gate WN then responds and closes gate SG. The output at g is therefore modified to effect the removal of the irregularity. Spurious marks and gaps are also removed if they do not exceed the delay of trigger VS. A delayed output may be taken from the righthand side of store GS.</p> |
