PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a motor overcurrent detecting method and a recording device which enable adequately overcurrent protection according to an operation mode. SOLUTION: When an overcurrent in a drive system of a motor 4 which drives a member to be driven of a carriage or the like is detected, a first threshold and a second threshold are set as current thresholds for overcurrent detection which are to be compared with a current of the drive system (3) of the motor 4. The thresholds are used by switching the first and second thresholds according to operation modes (in the case of acceleration and in the case of constant speed). On the basis of comparison results using the first and second thresholds, it is judged that an overcurrent flows when a current in either operation mode exceeds its corresponding threshold.
