PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure the composition and the particle diameter of a non-metal foreign materials which exist in steel or non-ferrous metals. SOLUTION: The composition and/or particle diameter of non-metal foreign matters existing on the surface of metal and/or inside it are determined by a laser excitated-ICP analysis method. Preferably, a sample or a large mass sample, cut out of steel or non-ferrous metal, is irradiated with a laser light to evaporate the foreign matters, and then undergoes ionization in a high temperature inductively coupled plasma. Thus, the number of ions generated is measured by a mass spectrometer or an emission spectrophotometer to determine a peak attributed to the foreign matters for elements by integration processing from a time curve of spectrum.
