PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for giving a suitable guideline concerning the chemotherapy for diagnosing and/or treating hepatitis c by determining hepatitis c virus(HCV) type 1 and subtypes 2a, 2b and 3a by a simple operation quickly, accurately and efficiently. SOLUTION: A method for determining a genotype of hepatitis c virus is given, wherein -167th,-163rd and -161st bases of 5' non-translation region of an HCV gene are determined, and then it is determined whether the genotype is type 1, subtype 2a, subtype 2b or subtype 3a based on the information concerning the bases.
