PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a polyester film for a magnetic recording medium suitable for use in the production of a digital video tape having a small number of DO with good productivity. SOLUTION: The polyester film has fine surface projections due to fine particles on one surface A, the number of the fine surface projections is 3,000,000-90,000,000/mm2, the particle diameter of the fine particles is 10-50 nm and the number of charged recess-shaped present in the surface A is <=100/10 m2. The magnetic recording tape is obtained by disposing a ferromagnetic metallic thin film layer on the surface of the polyester film.
