PURPOSE: A light control device is provided to easily and precisely control transmission, to ensure a low threshold voltage and to improve gray scale level. CONSTITUTION: A light control device comprises a GH(Guest-Host) cell(12) and a polarizing plate(11). The light control device is provided with a driving pulse generating circuit for driving the GH cell and a pulse width control part for modulating the pulse width of the driving pulse to control transmission of light falling on the GH cell. In addition, an image pickup device such as a CCD(Charge Coupled Device) camera is provided with the light control device arranged in the optical path of the image pickup system. In the light control device having the GH cell using negative type host material(13), the maximum transmission rate is increased up to about 75%. Thereby, the light control device is designed to be work in a high transmission area. The transmission rate of the control device is controlled easily by working voltage.
