1,165,483. Cold separation of gaseous chlorine mixtures. OSTERREICHISCHE STICKSTOFFWERKE A.G. 28 March, 1968 [23 May, 1967], No. 15079/68. Heading F4P. Chlorine is separated from a gaseous mixture thereof with nitrogen dioxide, nitrosyl chloride and oxygen by feeding the gas mixture at atmospheric pressure and at a temperature above its dew point through a line 1 into the sump 2 of a fractionating column 3, withdrawing overhead gaseous chlorine and oxygen through lines 4, 6 compressing at 7, cooling at 8 so as to liquefy the chlorine content, separating at 9 liquid chlorine from gaseous oxygen, expanding to atmospheric pressure at 12 a portion of the separated liquid chlorine and feeding it as reflux through a line 14 to the head of column 3, withdrawing the remainder of the separated liquid chlorine as product through a line 11 and withdrawing through a line 16 sump liquid containing mostly nitrogen dioxide and nitrosyl chloride. Prior to compression at 12 the overhead gas mixture is washed free of nitrosyl chloride and nitrogen dioxide with concentrated sulphuric acid at 5 and the cold gaseous oxygen resulting from expansion at 12 is returned to the compressor inlet.
