PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To realize ultra-high density recording of 100 Gb/inch2 class. SOLUTION: This magnetic head, which is used for recording/reproducing a signal recorded on a recording medium, is provided with a substrate, a magnetic head core having a magnetic gap on the substrate and a magnetorsistive element on the magnetic head core, so that the film thickness direction of the magnetic head core around the magnetic gap is made to be the same as the track width direction of the recoding medium. A winding wire for surrounding at least a part of the magnetic head core is also provided in this magnetic head, so that the signal is recorded on the recording medium by generating a magnetic field by the winding wire. The magnetoresistive element is provided with an electrical insulation layer on the magnetic head core side and a pin layer on the opposite side of the electrical insulation layer. The magnetic head core is provided with a soft magnetic layer, at least at the position corresponding to the electric insulation layer so that the soft magnetic layer is shared as a free layer of the magneto resistive element.
