PURPOSE: An apparatus and a method for adjusting the volume of a subscriber terminal in an exchange is provided to modify an amplification factor by inputting a specific button of a terminal and to adjust an amplification factor by a change of an amplifying coefficient using a CODEC filter. CONSTITUTION: A subscriber inputs a volume adjustment control signal to modify an old amplification rate using a specific button of a terminal(S10). The subscriber input a sound level control signal for a desired amplification rate using another specific button(S20). The terminal judges whether the inputted sound level control signal is within an adjustable range that an exchange allows(S30). If the requested amplification rate is not within the allowable range, the terminal generates an alarm signal(S40). In case that the desired amplification rate is within the allowable range, the terminal writes new amplification gain information in a subscriber database of the exchange and supplies an amplifying coefficient, or a volume adjustment amplification gain control signal, to a CODEC filter(S50). The CODEC filter stores the inputted amplifying coefficient in a coefficient RAM, adjusts amplification gain, and controls an amplification gain change of analog volume(S60).
