The device is connected to a piston (12), which is fitted in a cylinder (11) closed at both ends. The device has a detector coil (16) at one end of the cylinder, from which the piston rods protrudes out of the cylinder. A flange opposite the detection coil moves with the piston rod. The position of the piston rod is determined from a detection signal caused by a change in inductance in the coil, which varies with the position of the flange. Independent claims are included for a self-clamping device, an electromagnetic valve and a belt drive device.
