The method involves exchanging control information of an intermediate interface of a telecommunications network, over which two network elements, such as an exchange and a access network point, are connected for manufacturing and preserving subscriber connections of the network over subscriber connections associated with the network elements. At least a intermediate link is provided in the interface, which comprises a number of transmission channels for the exchange of profit information of the subscriber connections and associated signalling, as well as for the exchange of control information concerning the administration of the subscriber connections, the intermediate link and the interface. A protocol message (cmg) of a predetermined type is sent from one of the network elements according to a predetermined control protocol, over the interface to another network element, and a timer element (CTM), associated with the message type, is simultaneously started. The protocol message is sent once more (cmg'), and/or an error message (erm) is triggered at absence of a confirmation message (cck) sent by the other network element at the end of the time determined through the timer element. The timer element runs down after an adjustable duration which totals at least 2 s.
