PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain such a liquid crystal display device that the liquid crystal display can be seen in a dark place even when illumination or the like is not used for a reflection type display, or even when a back light is turned off for a back light type display without using electric power or other energy. SOLUTION: A luminous substance 3 is applied on the back of a liquid crystal part 2 instead of a conventional reflection part or a reflection plate of a back light part. In the device having the luminous substance 3 on the back of the liquid crystal part 2 has the following properties. (1) The luminous substance reflects light to display on the liquid crystal when the ambient is bright. (2) The luminous substance emits light to display on the liquid crystal when the ambient is dark.
