PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To maintain low cost in the installation of an elevator and ensure an effective space in a building. SOLUTION: A drive 1 is positioned on the top floor 57 of a building 50 where an elevating car 52 is disposed and is installed in a machine room 58 facing a hoistway 59 of the elevating car 52, therefore this elevator apparatus can be formed out of a small number of parts at a small space without need for a sheave such as a solar sheave used conventionally, thereby attaining low cost. It is thus possible to eliminate wastefulness of an increase in the height of a ceiling 57d of the top floor 57, and ensure an effective space of the top floor 57 because the necessary height of the machine room 58 is small.
