The engine valve operating device has an actuator (2) mounted on the cylinder head of the engine, for acting on the engine valve which is biased in the closed direction via a valve spring (4). The actuator has a pressure-responsive setting element (5) subjected to a reaction force provided by the actuator upon opening of the valve, for linear or angular adjustment of the actuator when a minimum reaction force is exceeded.
