PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a metal halide lamp used with a ceramic arc tube having less flickering, a high luminous flux maintenance factor during life time and lower possibility of flame failure. SOLUTION: In this lamp, a pair of electrodes 8 is disposed in a ceramic arc tube 1 sealed with an iodide pellet 13 composed of a metal halide so as to oppose to electrode coils 15. The following equation is satisfied where the projecting length of an electrode bar 14 from the end face of the electrode coil 15 isα[mm] and a lamp power is W [watt]. The equation is set 0.00056×W+0.061<=α<=0.0056XW+1.61.
