PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain an organic-inorganic composite which has high mechanical characteristics and water resistance, can be produced at a low cost, and is useful for highly functional plastic materials, resin additives, coatings, and so on, by forming covalent bonds between metal oxide particles and an organic polymer and then allowing a specific organic polymer matrix to contain the covalently bonded product. SOLUTION: This organic-inorganic composite is obtained by dissolving (A) a metal alkoxide compound (for example, tetramethoxysilane) and (B) an organic polymer (for example, a triethoxysilylated polyarylate) having one or more functional groups capable of being bound to the component A in an organic solvent preferably in a weight ratio of 1:99 to 90:10, hydrolyzing and polycondensing the dissolved components by a sol-gel method, and then adding and homogeneously dispersing (C) an organic polymer (for example, the main skeleton is a polyamide) constituting the matrix of the organic-inorganic composite material to the reaction solution. The components B and C have number- average mol.wts. of about 500 to 100,000, respectively.
