A let-out mechanism (4-6) ensures that the tailgate support (3) is tensioned when the tailgate (1) is closed (A), and as the tailgate is pivoted into a fully open position (B), the support is let out in a controlled manner. An Independent claim is also included for the use of the support for a vehicle tailgate that can be lowered into a horizontal position.
