PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a process for producing an optical fiber which is capable of producing an optical fiber of small PMD without requiring a large-scale apparatus modification of the existing apparatus and an apparatus for production therefor. SOLUTION: When the operations of drawing an optical fiber preform to form a bare optical fiber, providing the circumference of the bare optical fiber with a coating layer to form the optical fiber, introducing the optical fiber with a guide pulley and taking up the optical fiber on a bobbin are continuously carried out, the final guide pulley 20 which has a peripheral surface 21 of an approximate V shape and is provided with helical grooves 22 symmetrically to the center line with respect to the center line of the V shape on the surface of the peripheral surface 21 is disposed in the fore stage of the bobbin. The optical fiber is taken up while the final guide pulley 20 is moved back and forth in a direction parallel with the revolving shaft of the bobbin, by which twists are applied to the optical fiber during the passage through the final guide pulley 20 along the final guide pulley 20. |
