PURPOSE: A method and apparatus for decoding data in a contracted state is provided to reduce data need in a decoding process and shorten calculating time by choosing a special state condition from possible encoding datum and comparing the critical value with ACP. CONSTITUTION: A state selector is composed of a first and second transmitter. A first and second memory is linked to the first and second transmitter, and a first and second memory and a value quantized (PQV) is previously is stored. The state selector receives a possible previous state PS1, PS2 through a first and second junction line, and then an ENA or DIS is supplied to the first and second transmitter at the state selector. When the first transmitter receives an ENA signal from a memory unit, a first transmitter sends a first previous state PS1 to a first encoder. If the first transmitter receives a DIS signal from the first memory unit, the first transmitter makes a first junction line be disable and synchronously makes a first memory be enable to output a previous stored value(PQV). Therefore the PS1, PS2 from the sate selector are transmitted to a first and second encoder, and non-selected signal is discarded.
