PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select a proper quantization system at converting of inputted multi-level image data to binary image data. SOLUTION: Multi-level image data inputted from an image read part 1 of a composite machine passes a filter part 2 and a TRC conversion part 3 and is supplied to a binarizing ED(error diffusion) processing part 4 and a binarizing dither processing part 5 and is converted to binary image data by either of them. This binary image data is compressed via a compression part 6 and is stored in an image memory 7. A CPU 9 detects the remaining capacity of an image memory 7 selects the binarizing dither processing part 5 when the remaining capacity equal to or smaller than a prescribed value and selects the binarizing ED processing part 4 in other cases.
