The invention relates to an electrochemical gas sensor comprising at least two electrodes and an electrolyte chamber, whereby at least one of both electrodes consists of a substrate with an active layer deposited thereupon. The electrochemical gas sensor is characterized in that the active layer consists of at least two constituents of which one constituent is a metal and the other constituent is a nonmetal. The inventive electrochemical gas sensor can preferably be used for selectively determining nitrogen monoxide in a mixture comprised of different pollutant gases and exhibits a markedly low cross-sensitivity to carbon monoxide.
