The adaptor cable assembly comprises a plug connector having a housing in which a series of contacts are arranged about a centre point. The contacts are operable for the plug connector mating with a receptacle connector in either a first position or a second position. The first position and second positions are displaced 180 degrees relative to rotation about the centre point. At least one electrical cable is connected to the housing, the electrical cable having at least a first group of signal conductors electrically connected to a first set of selected contacts of the contacts for transmitting electrical signals if the plug connector is oriented in the first position. The electrical cable also has at least a second group of signal conductors electrically connected to a second set of selected contacts of the contacts for transmitting electrical signals if the plug connector is oriented in the second position.
