PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an error detecting circuit and an error detecting method whose error correcting abilities can be more enhanced with respect to a CD- ROM decoder adopting an algorithm in which an error correcting processing is to be executed only when data are judged to include an error by an error detection. SOLUTION: The error detecting circuit 201 in a decoder 20 includes an ECC error detecting part 21 which inputs data which are transmitted from the player side of a disk and in which ECC parities for correcting errors are included and performs syndrome calculations of a P-correction and a Q- correction in which ECCs are used in the input order of these data.
