A phase controlled array surface coil is positioned in a selected range of an object, the coil element constructing an image from magnetic resonance data. The method is carried out in steps: positioning a phase controlled array-surface coil (36) of a multiple of coil elements (40) in a selected place relationship to the object range (38); then selecting a coil element for use with the determination of the magnetic resonance data, if the coil element at least partly lies in a region extending along the phase controlled array with a length equal to the dimension, so that the region lies between the positions corresponding respectively to the first and the second boundary limits. Each of the selected coil elements is operated, for determining the magnetic resonance data of respective corresponding sub-regions of the object range (38).
