A driver (110) is provided for a Coriolis flow meter (112) having a flow tube (14) adapted to vibrate at a predetermined resonance frequency to determine mass flow rate of a fluid passing therethrough. The driver includes a coil (16), a ferromagnetic core (18) disposed coaxially within the coil, and spring (20) adapted to resiliently fasten the ferromagnetic core (18) and the coil (16) to one another. The coil (16) is adapted for being rigidly disposed on the flow tube (14) and the ferromagnetic core (18) is adapted to oscillate within the coil (16) in response to excitation of the coil. The spring (20) serves to guide and damped the oscillations of the ferromagnetic core relative to the coil so that the drive is free from the attachment to non-moving object. A pivotable and/or flexible restraint may be provided to maintain the core along a curved path to centripetally accelerate the core. The driver may also be utilized as a free standing sensor wherein the core is oscillated relative to the coil by vibration of the flow tube, so that the coil generates an output signal responsive thereto.
