PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing an unsaturated fatty acid utilized as raw materials, etc., for medicines and cosmetics from a saturated chain hydrocarbon by using a microorganism. SOLUTION: A strain belonging to the genus Mycobacterium, Rhizobium or Agrobacterium and having the ability to produce oils and fats containing an unsaturated fatty acid and/or an unsaturated fatty acid residue from a saturated chain hydrocarbon is cultured in a culture medium containing the saturated chain hydrocarbon or a microbial cell of the strain or a treated substance thereof is reacted with the saturated chain hydrocarbon to collect the produced unsaturated fatty acid or its salt and/or the unsaturated fatty acid produced by the hydrolysis of the fats and oils or its salt. Not only the unsaturated fatty acid can stably be produced without using a raw material derived from a natural animal or plant but also the unnatural type unsaturated fatty acid having an odd number of carbon atoms can be produced. |
