<p>A carbinol of the general formula <FORM:0625827/IV (b)/1> wherein X and Y represent hydrogen or halogen and R is alkyl, is prepared from the appropriate Grignard and a dichlorobenzophenone. In the examples 4, 41-dichlorobenzophenone is used with methyl, ethyl, n-butyl and lauryl magnesium bromides.ALSO:A pesticide comprises a carbinol of the general formula <FORM:0625827/VI/1> wherein X and Y represent hydrogen or halogen and R is alkyl, and a carrier. The composition may also include a bis (halophenyl) polychlorethane, in particular D.D.T. The proportion of the solid carbinol to chlorinated ethane may vary from 1 : 10 to 1 : 1 parts by weight. The carrier should be non-acidic and may be magnesium carbonate and/or magnesium silicate. The particle size of the carrier and active principle should be approximately 1 to 2 microns. An anti-bonding agent, such as talc may also be included. If applied as a spray a wetting agent such as lauryl sulphate or morpholine may be added. Solvents such as naphtha, or oil may be added to the composition or it may form an emulsion with water. The composition may be atomized by the addition of a solvent such as difluoro dichloromethane or methyl chloride.</p> |
