The invention relates to a phenolic resin and a binding agent containing said resin, which is particularly suitable for producing casting moulds and cores. The phenolic resin is obtained by condensing phenols and aldehydes. A mixture of substances can also be used as an additional starting material. Said mixture appears as a residue during production of bisphenol, i.e. as bisphenol A tar.
