An opaque, bowl-shaped body has an opening to allow sunlight to enter. Slots in the adjacent and opposite faces form a time scale to mark the passage of hours and fractions of hours. Raised edges around the opening can be used to influence the projection of oblique incident light. The slots are virtually parallel. They are covered by translucent, light-dispersing material. They may include symbols. Other body shapes are possible.
