The invention relates to a hydraulic backlash compensation element (2) for a cam follower of an internal combustion engine valve gear. Said hydraulic backlash compensation element (2) is provided with elements for producing a backlash in the event of undesired pressure fluctuations in a base circle phase of the acting cam. According to the invention, a valve element (14) which closes a high-pressure chamber (15) of said backlash compensation element (2) in the direction leading to a reserve chamber (11) is spring-loaded towards a high-pressure chamber (15) as opposed to a valve seat bore (13). When the pressures in the reserve chamber (11) and the high-pressure chamber (15) are equal, the spring arrangement causes the valve seat bore (13) to remain open, thereby bringing about a certain backlash effect by allowing a defined quantity of hydraulic fluid to spill out of the high-pressure chamber (15) into the reserve chamber (11) during pressure peaks. An attachment device for the spring elements is provided on a separate fixing part (18) on the reserve chamber side. Said fixing part (18) is thin-walled and is supported on a floor (12) of a pressure piston (6), having an outlet (23) for the hydraulic fluid at the same time.
