Small Cl2 bubbles are passed into a strongly acidic aqs. reaction mixture containing HCN (the by-product HCl concentration can be up to 20% in the aqueous reaction mixture). The reaction is preferably carried out in a column, adding the chlorine at the base via a bubbler and the HCN part of the way up. The advantage is the high strength of the by-product HCl and the good agitation by the Cl2-gas which promotes reaction at a lower temperature and gives good heat transfer- of US.3,197,273 which was 2-3% HCl so that concentration to a viable product is uneconomic.
|
