The equaliser receives a signal containing an optical signal which includes light components of several different wavelengths. The device is used to divide the signal into separate components and apply desired gains to the individual parts, to form a new optical signal. The equaliser is accessed by a circulator (20) placed in a transmission line (50,60). There is a quartz line coupler (30) which divides the input into wavelength multiplexed outputs (321-324). Each multiplexed output channel has a light reflector termination (41-44). The termination can be set to provide the required reflection for the wavelength through that channel.
