Tappet (1) for a valve gear of an internal combustion engine consisting of an external ring-shaped segment (2) which encloses concentrically a circular segment (3). Both segments (2, 3) are impinged upon by lifters (5, 7) having different travel and can be selectively coupled or uncoupled with each other by means of slides (10, 12, 13). The invention further discloses a gate shift device (29) which, in connection with a groove (26) on the lifter (7), allows a coupling or decoupling movement of the slides (10, 12, 13) to take place exclusively during a determined base circle phase of the lifter (7), thereby effectively discarding faulty switching or unstable switching conditions.
