The holding device consists of an isolating hydraulic assembly (2) mounted on the supply branches of a cylinder (1). This isolating assembly (2) comprises a lock chamber (9) having at each of its two openings a non-return valve of which one primary valve (11) in hydraulic connection with the outlet chamber (6) of the rod (7) of the cylinder (1) mounted in a direction passing through towards this chamber and a safety valve (13) mounted passing through in the same direction, the closing of the latter being delayed with respect to that of the primary valve (11). This invention is useful for holding in position the rod of all cylinders in particular under load and is of interest for all manufacturers of hydraulic equipment, particularly hoist cylinders, as well as for users.
