PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To improve the display in a plural-line simultaneous selective driving method (MLA method). SOLUTION: Liquid crystal layers 6 (twist angleθ=100 to 360 deg.) ofε(perpendicular)<4.5,Δε=3.5 to 6.5 are held between N pieces (N is an integer of >=200) of row electrodes 4 and plural column electrodes 5. These row electrodes 4 are divided to sub-groups of four pieces each and these sub-groups are simultaneously selected. The row selection voltages based on the signals obtd. by developing the selection column vectors (A1, A2, A3, A4) of four rows and four columns of a selection orthogonal matrix (A) by time series are impressed on the row electrodes and the display for the effective values of the voltages impressed on pixels is executed. As a result, the high-speed high-contrast display of low crosstalks is made possible without impairing the characteristics of the MLA method.
