Field emission device having a charge bleed-off barrier

A field emission device comprises: (i) a substrate (210) with a conductive layer (215) and a dielectric layer (240) which defines an emitter well (260); (ii) a charge bleed-off barrier (290) formed on the exposed sidewalls of the dielectric in the emitter well which conducts any charges which impinge on it; an electron emitter (270) formed on the conductive layer in the well; (iii) a gate extraction electrode (250); and (iv) a spaced anode (280). Also claimed is a method to manufacture the above device. Further claimed is a field emission display including a cathode plate formed of an array of the above emitters, a transparent anode plate with a cathodoluminescent layer, and a frame defining an interspace between cathode and anode plates.
