A device is disclosed for reducing the risk of injuries to the feet and legs of a person (11) sitting on a seat (10) inside a vehicle in the event of an accident causing the leg space (12) to be deformed. Among other measures, an airbag module (1) with at least one gas bag is associated to the leg space (12). At least one gas generator associated to the gas bag responds to a triggering signal by suddenly filling the gas bag with gas, so that the gas bag fills the leg space (12) in question in a short time and to a predetermined extent. The gas bag thus forms a shock-absorbing pad for the leg space before the splashboard (13) intrudes into the inside compartment of the vehicle.
