PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To suppress the change in an exit pupil position accompanying variable magnification and to simplify constitution by providing the system with a front lens group and a rear lens group and specifying the constitution of a second lens group. SOLUTION: The collimating lens group G0 constitutes the front lens group for condensing the light from a primary image. The first lens group G1 to third lens group G3 constitute the variable power lens system for varying the power of the secondary image by receiving the light from the front lens group G0. The spacing between the first and second lens groups G1, G2 and the spacing between the second and third lens groups G2, G3 change at the time of variable magnification. Further, the rear lens group for forming the secondary image by condensing the light from the variable power lens systems G1 to 3 is constituted in the imaging lens group G4. The condition equations -1<β2L andβ2H<-1, 1<β'2L andβ'2H<1 are satisfied, whereβ2H andβ2L denote the magnifications at the image conjugation of the second lens group G2 at a high magnification end and a low magnification end;β'2H andβ'2L denote the magnifications in the pupil conjugation of the second lens group at the high magnification end and the low magnification end.
