DEVICE FOR MOTION ESTIMATION FOR BLOCK MATCHING

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To estimate the motion of a video image through block matching in order to calculate an error between picture elements for each block of the image by specifying a processing circuit for each candidate of a motion vector. SOLUTION: Five pairs or groups of circuits for calculating the error integrated for each block of the pair of motion vector candidates having similar horizontal components are requested to perform a matching processing operation. Respective such circuits 8i of these processing circuits receive video inputs V1i and V2i concerning luminance. An output Si of each circuit is connected to an input Ei+1 of the next circuit. The output Si of the final circuit 8i is defined as the output of a processing group and connected to the input of a FIFO memory 9, and the output of this memory is connected to the input of a 1st circuit 8 of chain. Thus sum of these results provided by the output of the processing circuit 8i after the processing of line of the applied block is transferred into one FIFO memory 9 within the time for calculating the partial sum of the next block.
