PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enhance safety by electrically controlling the resistance to movement in stopping an opening/closing element such as a sliding door, so that large-scale fluctuations of the resistance to movement are prevented. SOLUTION: An opening/closing element, such as the sliding door 2 of a vehicle, is freely movably supported by a guide mechanism comprising a door driving cable member 12 and a drive pulley 15. An electromagnetic clutch 16 is provided by which the guide mechanism is connected to a motor driving part 11, i.e., an opening/closing element holding mechanism, in such a way that they are freely connected to and disconnected from each other, and the transmission maintaining force of the electromagnetic clutch 16 is regulated by means of an automatic sliding door control device 23 and a clutch drive circuit 52. When the door 2 is to be opened by the required opening angle and then stopped, the automatic sliding door control device 23 and the clutch drive circuit 52 set the transmission maintaining force of the clutch 16 to a value smaller than that employed in moving the door 2. Thus a holding force can be held constant regardless of the stopped position of the vehicle, safety can be enhanced through stabilization of the start of movement of the door 2. and the holding force can be set to a minimum limit, so that both miniaturization of the motor and reduction in the power consumed by the clutch can be achieved. |
